Underworld Evolution is directed by Len Wiseman and stars Kate Beckinsale, Scott Speedman, Bill Nighy and Tony Curran. Underworld evolution is a very successful sequel to the 2003’s Underworld. This one is for the fans, a sequel better than the original, and is a one of the most watched items in my dvd movies collection.

The first movie, Underworld, tells the story of two rival clans- the vampires and the werewolves (nicknamed Lycans for extra coolness factor) and one human caught up in the middle of it all- Michael. The story of the new movie continues to tell the events, which had occurred from the point where the first movie left off. And it also gives us more than a glimpse into the ancient history, hundreds of years ago.

The blood of the slain Lycan left by Selene in the previous movie, slowly drips into the underground coffin where Marcus’s mummified body lays, reviving it and bringing him back to life, along with the knowledge of betrayal embedded in it. Now the roles reverse at the hunter becomes the hunted: Selene and Michael must flee. On their way to freedom Selene must face her past including her transformation into a vampire, the death of her family and the bitter history of her kind.

The graphics in the movie are absolutely fantastic-especially in the chase scene where Marcus is attacking Michael from the air. Part of the realism is probably due to the monochromatic color scheme they have used again. The good news is that you don’t have to stare at all that blue for two hours as they got to use much more color this time around. The costumes are fantastic as well, although probably too sexy to be historically accurate. Although there is still no equality among the partners to crime, it is refreshing to see Michael step out of the helpless girlfriend role as he adapts to his new life as an immortal (Scott Speedman improves his acting skills in this movie).

At the end of it all Underworld Evolution is one of the better examples of vampire buy dvd, combining action and mystery in a compelling and exciting way.
